Fighting Hunger with Kechara Food Kitchen

“Hunger Knows No Barriers”

Advisory Apps joined forces with Kechara Food Kitchen, a non-profit organisation dedicated to fighting hunger in Malaysia by collecting surplus food from various donors and redistributing it to communities in need. Our team volunteered their time to support Kechara’s mission and contribute to the fight against food insecurity.

Kechara Food Kitchen (KFK) was founded in 2009 under the Kechara organisation and has since grown into one of Malaysia’s most recognised food aid charities. Operating out of Kuala Lumpur, KFK collects surplus food from hotels, bakeries, supermarkets, and restaurants that would otherwise go to waste, then channels it to the urban poor, elderly, homeless, and single-parent families across the Klang Valley. Beyond food distribution, Kechara also provides basic medical check-ups, counselling, and assistance with identity card applications so that recipients can access government aid and employment opportunities.

Our Volunteer Experience

The Advisory Apps team participated in the food preparation and distribution process, working alongside Kechara’s dedicated staff and other volunteers. Our day started with a briefing from the KFK coordinators, who walked us through the scale of food insecurity in urban Malaysia — a reality that often goes unnoticed in a rapidly developing city like Kuala Lumpur.

From there, our team sorted donated food items, helped pack meal portions, and joined the distribution run to several locations around the city. The most memorable part was the face-to-face interaction with the people we served. Hearing their stories and seeing their gratitude put our daily challenges in perspective and reinforced the importance of community solidarity.

It was a humbling and rewarding experience that brought our team closer together while serving a meaningful cause.

The Scale of Food Insecurity in Malaysia

Malaysia produces enough food to feed its population, yet food insecurity remains a persistent issue in urban centres. Rapid urbanisation and the rising cost of living have pushed vulnerable groups — migrant workers, the elderly living alone, and low-income families — further from consistent access to nutritious meals. Organisations like Kechara Food Kitchen bridge that gap, and corporate volunteers play an important role in keeping their operations running.

Why Corporate Social Responsibility Matters

At Advisory Apps, we believe that giving back to the community is an essential part of being a responsible business. Initiatives like our partnership with Kechara Food Kitchen reflect our commitment to making a positive impact beyond the technology we build. As a KL-based software company, we are part of this city’s fabric, and we take that responsibility seriously. We encourage fellow tech companies in Malaysia to explore volunteering with Kechara or similar organisations — the experience is transformative, both for the communities served and for the teams who show up.
