Volunteering at SPCA Selangor
It was a great opportunity for us to be there, and spent our time with all these cats and dogs! It was so much fun!
The SPCA Selangor shelter rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes hundreds of animals every year. Our team rolled up their sleeves to help with feeding, cleaning enclosures, and spending quality time socialising with the cats and dogs awaiting adoption.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor is one of Malaysia’s oldest and most established animal welfare organisations. Founded in 1958, the shelter operates from its facility in Ampang, Selangor, where it houses dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals that have been abandoned, surrendered, or rescued from neglect. Beyond sheltering, SPCA Selangor runs vaccination and neutering programmes, investigates cruelty cases, and conducts educational outreach to schools and communities to promote responsible pet ownership.
During our visit, our team helped with the morning routines that keep the shelter running — preparing meals for the animals, washing food bowls, scrubbing kennel floors, and refreshing water stations. The afternoon was dedicated to socialisation, which is a critical part of preparing shelter animals for adoption. By spending time walking the dogs and playing with the cats, volunteers help the animals become more comfortable around people, which directly improves their chances of finding a permanent home.
Supporting Animal Welfare as a Team
Corporate social responsibility at Advisory Apps goes beyond the office. Activities like this give our team a chance to bond while contributing to a meaningful cause. Supporting animal welfare is close to the hearts of many on our team, and we encourage other organisations to consider volunteering at their local SPCA as well.
The Importance of Animal Welfare in Malaysia
Stray animal populations remain a significant challenge across Malaysian cities and towns. Urban expansion, abandonment by pet owners, and limited public awareness contribute to the issue. Shelters like SPCA Selangor are often stretched thin, relying on donations and volunteer labour to sustain their operations. Corporate volunteer days make a tangible difference — they provide the extra hands the shelter needs while also raising awareness among employees who may go on to adopt, foster, or advocate for animal welfare in their own circles.
